Effect of Application Time of Ethephon with Calcium Acetate on Maturation and Quality of ¢¥ Campbell Early ¢¥ Grapes

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to study the effects of ethphon with calcium acetate on the maturation and qualities of `Campbell Early¢¥ grapes (Vitis labruscana).
1. Ethylene evolution from berries was continued at high level for more than 1 week after application of ethephon with calcium acetate.
2. Contents of total sugars and total acids in fruits and berry weight were not significantly different at ripening stage compared with the untreated control by application of ethephon with calcium acetate. The effects of ethephon with calcium acetate on the total phenol content did not show distinct tendency.
3. The maturation of grapes was delayed 4 to 7 days when ethephon with calcium acetate was applied before and at veraison, but it was hastened 4 to 5 days when applied after veraison. 4. Calcium acetate could not completely offsetted defoliation caused by ethephon treatment in weak vine and especially in vineyards under unfavorable environment for air drainage.
5. The results suggest that the maturity of grapes can be controlled by application time of ethephon with calcium acetate without declining of quality.
